What is the Nevada Minimum Wage?
The Nevada Minimum Wage is the lowest hourly wage that an employee working in Nevada can legally be paid. Both Nevada and the federal government have set a legal minimum wage - Nevada's is $8.25 per hour, while the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. Federal law states that the applicable minimum wage is whichever minimum wage is higher.
Nevada Labor Laws
Nevada's minimum wage can be reduced to $7.25 for employees who are provided health benefits by their employer. The premium overtime pay requirement on either a daily or weekly basis is not applicable to employees who are compensated at not less than one and one-half times the minimum rate or to employees of enterprises having a gross annual sales volume of less than $250,000.
The basic hourly rate is increased to $6.55 when the employer offers the employee a qualified health plan.
Nevada Minimum Wage Exemptions
Certain occupations and employees are exempt from Nevada and Federal Minumum Wage regulations, including tipped workers, students in high school and college, and certain disabled workers (with a certificate from the Nevada Department of Labor). How much do Nevada Minimum Wage employees earn?
Full time minimum wage workers in Nevada earn a total of $330.00 per week and approximately $17,160.00 per year (based on a 8 hour days and a 260-day work year) before taxes. The federal poverty threshold for a household of two is $14,570 per year.
Nevada Overtime Wage Law
All Nevada employees working over 40 hours in a work week are entitled an overtime wage of at least 1.5 times their regular hourly pay rate - therefore, the overtime minimum wage in NV is $12.38 per hour.
In addition, Nevada law requires all employees working over 8 hours in a single day to be paid overtime.
Some workers or employers are exempt from overtime law including independant contractors, seasonal workers, and some farm workers. Contact the Nevada Department of Labor for details.
